WORLD DAY OF THE POOR

TODAY IS DESIGNATED AS WORLD DAY OF THE POOR. A DAY ESTABLISHED BY POPE FRANCIS IN 2017 FOR CATHOLICS TO
REFLECT ON HOW POVERTY IS AT THE VERY HEART OF THE GOSPEL.

The theme for 2024 is “The prayer of the poor rises up to God” (Sirach 21:5).
“The poor hold a privileged place in God’s heart,” Pope Francis said in his message for the day. “God knows the sufferings of his children because he is an attentive and caring father. As a father, he takes care of those who are most in need: the poor, the marginalized, the suffering, and the forgotten. No one is excluded from his heart, for in his eyes, we are all poor and needy. We are all beggars because without God, we would be nothing.”

UKRAINIAN GREEK CATHOLIC RITE

Since Easter this year, a monthly Liturgy in the UKRAINIAN GREEK CATHOLIC RITE has started in Belfast. This is in response to a request from Ukrainian refugees living throughout Northern Ireland for pastoral support in their own language and Rite. Fr Taras Khomych, the Ukrainian Chaplain in Liverpool, travels to celebrate the Divine Liturgy at St Patrick’s Church, Donegall Street, Belfast on the second Sunday of the month at 1pm. The established Ukrainian Catholic community in Dublin has kindly created an ongoing advert for the Liturgy in English and Ukrainian to be shared. With Ukrainian refugees in Northern Ireland being rather spread out, more are finding out about the pastoral support available through their social media since the Liturgies began.
The main contact for the Ukrainian Catholic community in Ireland is: ugccie@gmail.com

The souls of all the faithful departed

Since all believers are bound together by the love of Christ, the dead are not beyond our love. We are linked to the dead, just as when they were alive; and so our motivation to pray for them is love. Recall the memory of your loved one. Pray God’s peace and rest on their soul. Pray also for yourself that God in his infinite love for you will give you peace of mind and heart at this time of loss and brokeness in your life. May the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
